Sierra Recycling & Demolition celebrates 60 years

California Product Stewardship Council lauds Canadian government initiative on plastics

The California Product Stewardship Council (CPSC) shared the above video and the New York Times article below with their members and stakeholders this week, stating: "We wanted to share with you a short yet powerful video and article about the Canadian Prime Minister's announcement that they are taking on plastics, will push forward with Enhanced Producer Responsibility for all plastics, and will put a single-use plastic ban in place by 2021.  We are energized by this video and, with your support, will continue to push California forward as part of this movement.  The time is now!"

BHS Launches CoBot for Recycling Industry

BHS has launched the recycling industry's first collaborative robot (CoBot) sorter, the Max-AI® AQC-C, a solution that is comprised of Max-AI VIS (for Visual Identification System) and at least one CoBot. The AQC-C is designed to work safely alongside people which allows it to be to be quickly and easily placed into existing recycling facilities and installed in sort cabins, on narrow walkways and in other tight locations. Up to four robotic sorters can be added behind each Max-VIS system; each sorter can sort up to 40 picks per minute and up to three different material types. 

​BHS launches Max-AI AQC-C sorting system

Bulk Handling Systems (BHS) has launched the Max-AI AQC-C, a solution that is comprised of Max-AI VIS (for Visual Identification System) and at least one collaborative robot (CoBot). CoBots are designed to work safely alongside people which allows the AQC-C to be quickly and easily placed into existing Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs). BHS launched the original Max-AI AQC (Autonomous Quality Control) at WasteExpo in 2017. At this year's show, our next generation AQC will be on display along with the AQC-C.  

New mobile processing system designed to make dealing with EPS waste cost-effective

The new Mobile Styro-Constrictor from Brohn Tech LLC, based in Ursa, Illinois, offers complete mobile EPS (expanded polystyrene or "styrofoam") recycling without the need for a costly facility for processing the material.  According to Brien Ohnemus of Brohn Tech, the challenge in recycling EPS has always been in making the process cost effective.  With the Constrictor, it is not only environmentally responsible but economically feasible.

Skrotfrag robotic sorting line for scrap equipped with three-armed ZenRobotics Heavy Picker

Swedish scrap processing company Skrotfrag installs a robotic sorting line for scrap metal. The sorting line, equipped with a three-armed ZenRobotics Heavy Picker, will be the third of its kind in Sweden. Skrotfrag will be one of the first companies to apply robotic sorting technology to scrap metal. The application is a welcomed addition to advance Skrotfrag's operations.

BioHiTech Global initiates operations at first HEBioT SRF facility in U.S.

BioHiTech Global, Inc. has initiated operations at the first HEBioT renewable resource recovery facility in the U.S., located in Martinsburg, West Virginia. BioHiTech has successfully completed the first phase of plant commissioning including the facility's reception area, overhead bridge cranes, and its primary mechanical sorting equipment.  The company has begun the next phase of plant commissioning and progressing operations, which includes receiving limited amounts of waste and beginning runs of its HEBioT Process, a patented high efficiency mechanical and biological treatment process for producing an EPA recognized solid recovered fuel (SRF). 

Refind Sorter launched for flexibility in range of materials processing applications

Refind Technologies AB, an innovative manufacturer based out of Gothenburg, Sweden has introduced the Refind Sorter, a new modular and flexible classification and sorting solution.  It consists of the Refind Mind - the actual classification software - and has the option to include the Camera box and a Sorting add-on.

BASF making products with chemically recycled plastics for first time

BASF is breaking new ground in plastic waste recycling with its ChemCycling project. Chemical recycling provides an innovative way to reutilize plastic waste that is currently not recycled, such as mixed or uncleaned plastics. Depending on the region, such waste is usually sent to landfill or burned with energy recovery. But chemical recycling offers another alternative: Using thermochemical processes, these plastics can be utilized to produce syngas or oils. The resulting recycled raw materials can be used as inputs in BASF's production, thereby partially replacing fossil resources.

SamurAI sorting robot finding success in the recycling industry

In the spring of 2018, Plessisville, Quebec-based Machinex introduced its new SamurAI sorting robot, which, according to the manufacturer, has since generated a lot of industry interest. Nearly six months after its launch, the response of the market has been very positive and nine robots have been sold to date. The first two SamurAI in Canada have just been installed in Quebec while six more robots will be installed by next year in Canadian sorting centers. Moreover, the company says they continue to have regular requests from customers who are greatly interested in this cutting-edge technology.

The purpose of paper recycling is to produce high quality recycled paper, responding to the high-quality specifications required by paper consumers either from the graphic, hygiene or packaging sectors. In consequence, any collection scheme should be designed in a way to provide grades of paper for recycling adapted to the requirements of high value recycling, according to the EN 643 to the paper industry, either directly or after sorting. (EN 643 is the European List of Standard Grades of Paper and Board for Recycling.)

Micron Waste strengthens business development, engineering and corporate capabilities

Micron Waste Technologies Inc., a leading developer of clean technology waste management systems, has announced the hiring and promotion of key management staff to build capabilities in business development, engineering and corporate relations. Micron's food and cannabis waste treatment systems are industrial-grade organic waste processers which pulverize and render organic waste in combination with a proprietary blend of microbes and enzymes designed and developed by Micron. Importantly, as part of Micron's full-system waste treatment platform, effluent from the systems is further treated to derive clean greywater which can be reused in industrial or agricultural operation. Alternatively, the treated regulatory-compliant greywater, which meets municipal discharge standards, can be safely discharged. Active Pharmaceutical Compounds (APIs) in cannabis waste are further biologically treat to denature cannabinoids present, keeping them out of watersheds where they can bio-accumulate.

Green Machine initiative to use closed loop anaerobic digestion to help bring energy independence to Las Vegas

Las Vegas is the land of overindulgence and gluttony. In addition to consuming a record-breaking amount of energy (Nevada spends $700 million per year on out-of-state fossil fuels to power their flashing lights, gigantic billboards and air conditioned casinos) the city also has the largest landfill in America. With over 42 million tourists per day, one casino group alone generates over 800 tons of daily food waste.

ZenRobotics Heavy Picker sorts bulky plastics by polymer, shape and size

According to ZenRobotics, with their Heavy Picker it's possible to sort large and heavy plastics fractions with high purity before it is shredded. Thanks to this machine's Artificial Intelligence it's possible to sort plastics based on various characteristics. These robots are able to identify objects similar to a human and can be taught to identify and sort specific objects, such as garden furniture, pipes, crates etc. Theycan also sort plastics by polymer or colour, and add flexibility to sorting by allowing customers to sort waste exactly as required.

"Ryan's Route" stars 8-year-old Ryan Hickman, a recycling entrepreneur and owner of Orange County, California-based Ryan's Recycling, as he trades in the family pickup for a more appropriate work truck: a Mack LR refuse model.

In 2008 GreenWaste Recovery, Inc. (GWR) was awarded SWANA's Gold Award for Recycling Excellence for the company's Mixed Waste Material Recovery Facility (MRF). The system, built by Bulk Handling Systems (BHS), was among the first of its kind in the United States and has been a showcase for diversion and recycling excellence over its lifetime. Now, more than a decade later, a BHS overhaul has more than doubled the system's throughput and added significant technology to boost recovery, product quality and level of automation.
