Compost turners provide high production with one person operation
SP series compost turners include the SP-170 (shown) and the SP-155, and are designed for self-propelled applications. The SP 170 is designed for large volume facilities handling up to 2,670 cubic yards-per-hour, and is offered in two-or four-wheel-drive, with both a work speed and a road speed for easy site manoeuvra-bility. Units have an onboard computer system to monitor critical functions and two cameras to give operators a great view of the turning drum and tail boom. A short turn radius makes this machine easy to manoeuvre at the end of rows. The SP-170 is powered by a 305-hp, Tier 3 engine and features total hydraulic control for propel and drum motion. The SP-170 uses a 14-foot drum and can be configured with either an on-board water tank or a hose reel water system. Units are cab controlled with numerous computer features, and are the ultimate in operator ease and convenience. The award-winning model SP-155 self-propelled straddle turner is designed for operations exceeding 30,000 tons per year witha drum of 13 feet which, with side scoops, will turn windrows up to 15 feet wide and six feet high. These units will turn over 3,800 cubic yards-per-hour when operating at a speed of 1/2 mph, weighs 30,000 pounds and are approximately 22 feet by 20 feet, with a speed of 15 mph for travelling when not in the windrow.

Features of all turners (pull-type turners are also available) from Midwest BioSystems include: one person operation; no separate water truck necessary; an eight week typical time frame from windrow formation to finished product: a variable drum speed in the 150 to 300 hp range that maximizes humus formation; an advanced mechanical spraying system that provides even water distribution and enables proper distribution of inoculant; and high durability.

Additionally, the drums on these turners can be removed vertically from the windrow at any time, enabling the operator to profile the inside of the pile for compost progress or, if the material is too wet, simply pull out and move on.
