ORGANICS COLLECTION BINS IN HAMILTON

ORGANICS COLLECTION BINS IN HAMILTON
After years of one choice for collecting household organics in Ontario Cities, the City of Hamilton has recently implemented a cart system with two size bins. This spring residents received a choice of bins, a 120 litre (32 gallon) cart, collected with an automatic arm, or the new 40l organic bin manufactured by the Rehrig Pacific Company, which is collected manually. All 166,000 residents also received a Rehrig 9l kitchen bin.

The decision to go with this variety of containers came after a thorough pilot program and evaluation. The results were clear; the suburbs and residents with families needed a large cart for their larger volumes of organic materials. Residents in the core area with smaller lots and restricted space needed a 40l bin.

Choosing the large bin was fairly straight forward as there is a good number of producers. The 40l bin was a bit more of a challenge, as until last August there was only one design. Hamilton ended up choosing the new Rehrig 40l Organic bin. To date Hamilton has had a good response by residents and collection staff to the 40l bin. The new hybrid system in Hamilton not only gives choice to the residents, but it opens up competition for suppliers, letting them bring new and better designs and ideas to the market.

By supporting competition and giving residents a choice, Hamilton has made the move to organic recycling programs both more interesting and more sustainable.
