Amy Lestition Burke has stepped down as CEO and executive director of the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA), effective Aug. 10.

During the interim, Carolyn Muller, vice president of industry engagement, will serve as acting CEO while the board conducts a national search for Burke's successor.

"Our goal is to have a new CEO in place by the end of the year while ensuring we take the time necessary to identify the right leader," SWANA says.

SWANA says Burke, who took over as CEO and executive director of the organization in November 2023, led the firm through a period of transition and "helped rebuild the membership into a connected, engaged community." Burke was instrumental in launching RCon, SWANA's new flagship conference, and travelled extensively to chapters across North America.

"We are grateful for her leadership, dedication and the many contributions she has made to both SWANA and the solid waste industry," the association says. "We sincerely thank Amy for her service and wish her every success in her future endeavors."

The association's board of directors will conduct a national search for "a leader who continues to make meaningful progress in implementing its strategic plan and advancing the four key goals that will shape the future of our association and industry," per SWANA.
