New Eriez NanoRanch A.I. uses artificial intelligence to sort nonferrous fines by vision
New sorter capable of identifying and sorting a vast and customizable range of nonferrous materials with up to 95 percent accuracy
The new Eriez NanoRanch A.I. (Artificial Intelligence) Sorter uses vision to identify and sort a vast and customizable range of nonferrous materials, providing greater than 95 percent accuracy when the machine is trained with samples.
Introduced at the 2019 Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) Convention and Exposition, this innovative sorter is already garnering significant interest from the industry.
Eriez Recycling Market Manager Mike Shattuck says, "There was a lot of excitement around our ISRI booth, with a constant flow of visitors interested in our new A.I. Sorter." He adds, "The inquiries we have received since the close of ISRI are proof the buzz extended beyond the show floor. In fact, after seeing it run at ISRI, a major scrap recycler committed immediately to field testing an A.I. Sorter with enhanced production capabilities."
Inspired by natural vision and featuring the speed and reliability of a computer, the Eriez NanoRanch A.I. Sorter can sort a wide range of materials, including coins from zebra, reds from whites and printed circuit boards (PCBs) from zurik or zorba.
Shattuck explains, "The separations we are talking about right now are really just the tip of the iceberg. We are excited to meet with customers to discuss how the A.I. Sorter can conquer their separation challenges and create new revenue streams for them."
Shattuck says that one obvious application for the Eriez NanoRanch A.I. Sorter involves the 12 million automobiles that become scrap each year.
"Some recycling industry experts speculate there is an average of around $1.50 in coins in each of these automobiles, a combination of quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies. That means a huge market exists there," says Shattuck.
The Eriez NanoRanch A.I. Sorter has a capacity of 1,000 lbs. per hour and handles materials from .5 to 1-inch. Eriez currently offers a 20-inch standard A.I. Sorter unit which includes a common frame, control, feeder, splitter and discharge chutes. The company says it will expand the line in the near future to add units in other sizes.
