The Alameda County Waste Management Authority (StopWaste) has been awarded a $263,000 grant by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District to work with Livermore Sanitation, Inc. (LSI) and use Compology's automated, camera-based dumpster monitoring technology to reduce contamination in commercial business compost streams and increase diversion of organics from landfills. Diversion Strategies will oversee the tracking and reporting of progress.

"Collecting food scraps in commercial organics bin is important for Alameda County to meet its waste reduction goals and make a positive impact on the environment," said Wendy Sommer, Executive Director, StopWaste.Org. "Keeping it clean - including no plastic, metal or glass in the bins - is essential to this effort. We look forward to working with our partners and businesses on this innovative project to reduce contamination and promote healthy compost."

In order to meet StopWaste's mandatory organics diversion, LSI has traditionally sent people to commercial dumpster locations to "lid flip" or audit for contamination. LSI brought on Compology as their dumpster monitoring technology of choice due to its unique ability to remotely capture in-dumpster images, automatically identify and measure contamination and assess dumpster fullness throughout the entire fill cycle of a dumpster.

StopWaste believes implementing Compology will provide a path to affordably monitor, and educate generators in real-time; LSI intends to use Compology to provide consistent, highly-targeted education to generators to improve disposal habits and to reduce stream contamination for improved diversion from landfills; and The Bay Area Air Quality Management District aims to reduce the amount of organics in landfills, and as a result, reduce the level of methane emissions.

"Compology's bin content monitoring system paired with the comprehensive outreach and education efforts by StopWaste and LSI have the ability to change the dialogue on contamination with the generator by having documented images of bin contamination," said Rachel Oster, Principal, Diversion Strategies.

Compology and Diversion Strategies will provide reporting and analysis support to LSI to verify the feasibility of using remote monitoring to reduce contamination by commercial businesses.

Shell joins as equity partner with Enerkem and others on first-of-its-kind waste-to-chemicals project

A consortium of world-leading companies comprising Montreal-based Enerkem, Air Liquide, Nouryon and the Port of Rotterdam, has announced that Shell will join as a partner in Europe's first advanced waste-to-chemicals facility in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. According to Enerkem, Shell will become an equal equity partner in the proposed commercial-scale waste-to-chemicals (W2C) project, which will be the first of its kind in Europe to make valuable chemicals and bio-fuels out of non-recyclable waste materials.

​Rubicon Global and State Farm Arena divert nearly 12 tons of waste from landfills

Rubicon Global, the Atlanta-based technology company that provides waste, recycling and smart city solutions to businesses and governments worldwide, has successfully diverted nearly 12 tons of waste destined for landfills from State Farm Arena during last week's festivities in Atlanta, Georgia. GFL Environmental and Waste Industries announce merger

GFL Environmental Inc. ("GFL") based out of Toronto, and Raleigh, North Carolina-based Waste Industries have announced that they have entered into a definitive merger agreement in a transaction that values Waste Industries at a total enterprise value of US$2.825 billion (approximately C$3.65 billion). The transaction, which is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2018, is subject to customary regulatory approvals.

It should come as no great shock to hear that the waste management industry is thriving. According to the Environmental Resource and Education Foundation, the solid waste industry contributes nearly $100 billion, one million jobs, and just over one percent of U.S. GDP to the nation's economy. This economic growth fuels demand and results in increased waste generation. 

Building Tomorrow: Volvo goes all in on wheeled excavators for North America

Volvo Construction Equipment demonstrated that they are dedicated to the growing North American wheeled excavator market during their fall press briefing at their Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, manufacturing and customer experience facility. According to the company, the wheeled excavator market in North America is on pace for 23 percent growth in unit sales for 2016–2018, while Volvo is on pace for 60 percent growth in share of total unit sales for North America in 2016–2018. During that time, Volvo has introduced seven new models of wheeled excavator, including three replacement models. These models cover six size classes ranging from the 5- to 9-ton class to the 23-ton class, and include the introduction of Volvo's first dedicated material handler for North America, the EW240EMH.

Recycle Across America launches largest recycling education campaign in U.S. history

In response to the U.S. recycling crisis, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization Recycle Across America (RAA) has launched the celebrity-led "Let's recycle right!" ("Let's") Campaign, which is the largest recycling education campaign in U.S. history. Many of the campaign's TV/billboard/print/social media ads feature simple tips for proper recycling and introduce a society-wide standardized labeling solution for recycling bins, which "makes it possible for people everywhere to recycle right."
