An electronics recycling facility operated by Ecovery, LLC in Loxley, Alabama, is the latest to receive Recycling Industry Operating Standard (RIOS) certification, as of January 24, 2011.

Ecovery specializes in mechanical de-manufacturing and separation of electronic and non-ferrous scrap. In addition to processing, Ecovery is the exclusive licensed representative for Guidetti, Lyndex, SCS, and KM - four of "the most recognized and respected names in the European recycling equipment industry." Ecovery, LLC operates out of a 70,000+ square foot facility, processing 2.5 million pounds per month of electronics and non-ferrous scrap.

Ecovery, LLC became certified by an accredited third-party auditor at its Loxley facility after the auditor verified all RIOS requirements as per the Institue of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI.)  According to Ecovery’s Director of Commodities, Brock Norris, the company’s managers and consultants worked specifically to design and implement a management system that involved training and other aspects meant to meet the RIOS standards.

“We are excited to join the 21 facilities who are RIOS certified worldwide," said Norris. "Ecovery recognizes that the responsibility for quality, environment, health and safety are shared, requiring cooperation not only between employees and supervisors, but among and between all those who assume the various roles within the company.  Ecovery continues to improve upon quality, environmental, and health & safety issues to provide an injury free workplace, protect our environment and provide quality service and products to our customers.”

RIOS is a system designed and overseen by ISRI to help recycling companies manage the quality, environmental, and health & safety (QEH&S) issues of their operations. Following RIOS certification, Ecovery now enters the final stages to become a CERTIFIED ELECTRONICS RECYCLER, as defined by ISRI through the R2 certification program. According to Ecovery, R2 certification is expected to be completed before year end, 2011. More information about Ecovery, LLC can be found at www.ecoveryllc.com.

The Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries and its more than 1,550 members, in 2010, joined in supporting the announcement of the creation of R2 Solutions as a stand-alone, non-profit organization formed to manage and continually develop the Responsible Recycling (R2) Certified Electronics Recycler Program within the Recycling Industry Operating Standard (RIOS). The R2 Solutions body is charged specifically with managing the continual development of R2 Practices. R2 Practices are a set of requirements designed to establish a high bar for quality, environmental protection, health & safety, and data security, and which precludes shipping of hazardous materials to countries that have laws prohibiting their import. . A full set of standards is available at www.r2solutions.org.

To date, there are 21 electronics recycling facilities certified to the R2 Practices. Sims Recycling Solutions Canada became the first to become R2 certified in Canada, in 2010.

The Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries represents over 350 electronics refurbishers and recyclers in North America. The organization has been a charter member of R2 efforts since its inception and offers R2 certification as part of its Certified Electronics Recycler Program.
