Advanced technical solutions can substantially reduce occurrence and mitigate cost of fire incidents in waste and recycling

We have seen a spike in fires in the recycling industry in 2018, compared to previous years. March, April and May 2018 are now the highest months we have recorded for fire incidents at waste and recycling facilities. March 2018 could merely be an anomaly. But then came April, with 36 fires, and then May, with 38 fires reported - the highest number of fires in any month since I began reporting recycling and waste industry facility fires in 2015.

Waste and recycling industry seeing 93% increase in facility fires in first 4 months of 2018

Why are we seeing a spike in fires In 2018?
This is a question that I do not have the answer to. I have been reporting on waste and recycling facility fires since February, 2015 and I am witnessing the monthly data unfold along with the rest of you. March's number of 37 fire incidents is not only one of the highest figures on record but is more than the number of fires that occurred in both March of 2016 and 2017 combined. March 2018 could merely be an anomaly. But then comes April. April's number of 36 fire incidents is not only one of the highest months on record as well, it is also more than the number of fires that occurred in both April of 2016 and 2017 combined.

Is the recycling industry facing a fire epidemic?

There is certainly no simple answer to the question: is there a fire epidemic facing the recycling industry? But it is an issue that needs addressing. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines an epidemic "as an outbreak or product of sudden rapid spread, growth or development." Although we have been faced with facility fires in the waste and recycling industry for years, we are just now seeing the real extent of the problem.

Waste and metal top list of recycled materials involved in the highest percentage of facility fires

Does anyone know how many fires have occurred at Waste & Recycling facilities in North America so far this year? When we first launched the Fire Rover, we searched everywhere for this information. We have had conversations with executives, operations leaders, safety teams and institutional investors and, although we gained invaluable market information, no one seemed to have access to the data we sought. If you’re reading this article and you know the answer, please share; but in lieu of a source, we attempted to figure out a way to compile the information on our own.
