Sessions cover topics ranging from legal issues to international programs and an EPR bearpit. Despite the rain, the second annual food rescue event, Feeding the 5000 (F5KYYC), was a huge success thanks to community partners and supporters. F5KYYC provided a free lunch to Calgarians on June 14 while teaching attendees about food waste. The event served 7500 portions of food and saved over 700 kg of food from the landfill.
The Alberta Used Oil Management Association (AUOMA) received notice recently that the Government of Alberta will be transferring the delegation of the used oil material recycling program to the Alberta Recycling Management Authority (Alberta Recycling).
Alberta remains the most wasteful province in Canada, with a per-capita waste generation of just under 1,000 kg/person/year, compared to a Canadian average of 700 kg, and a Nova Scotia rate of under 400 kg. This represents significant environmental impact, a huge waste of resources and lost economic opportunity.
Recycling, circular economy, waste minimization – even though the lexicon may vary, the goals are the same: reduce waste and its associated environmental impacts. The third week in October is Waste Reduction Week in Canada - the annual week-long celebration with the goal of empowering and engaging individuals, municipalities, businesses and schools to lead by example and take action to reduce waste.
