Sorting technology replaces air with electromechanical paddles

The new Eriez Pro Sort Metal Sorter uses a conveyor belt and sensors, but replaces air actuators with patent-protected electromechanical paddles. The Pro Sort is ideal for scrap metal applications and employs nominal two-inch wide “motorized paddles” that create a powerful “kicking” action, launching metals into sorting stations. Units are constructed with an electromagnetic coil that is attached to a flipper shaft and the paddle. The coil is sandwiched between permanent magnets and when energized, causes the paddle to flip up until a reverse in polarity causes it to return to its original position. Paddles are positioned side-by-side in a bank as wide as the belt. When the sensors detect a piece of metal on the belt, the control circuit energizes the appropriate paddle at the moment the metal passes above, causing it to be flipped over a split- ter, and separating it from the non-metallic product stream.
Pro Sort is designed as a replacement for traditional, costly air systems installed downstream of Eddy Current Separators, which require air compressors in the range of 125 hp or larger to furnish the high vol- ume of clean, dry air necessary to operate Pro Sort features a unique modular design which allows easy access to replace- able sensors and paddle drive units called “six packs”, and alignment of sensors, paddles and controls allows components to operate in different modes during a single cycle. Dual mode segregates waste mate- rial, ferrous and non-ferrous metals and stainless steel in a single operation. For example, half the belt on these units can recover metals from waste, and half can sort stainless from non-ferrous. Other key features include: no air compressor plant, valves or airlines required; low operating and maintenance costs; reduced dust generation; modular design in units up to 130 inches wide; electromagnetic operation that exceeds 40 million cycles and excellent cold weather operation.
