ecoATM wins award at electronics recycling expo

The second annual International Electronics Recycling Conference & Expo was held in May in San Francisco. One of the many industry honourees at the event, eco-ATM was presented with the “most innovative product of the year award.”

For ecoATM’s award, show judges cited the automated eCycling system’s abilities to identify, test, value and provide immediate payment for used mobile devices such as phones and iPods; track relevant information about the devices into the recycling downstream; and add value through services such as data removal and compliance reporting.

According to ecoATM, their kiosks have been very successful in collecting exponentially more devices than mail-in or POS-based systems, while motivating consumers to recycle by making it simple and rewarding: the kiosks pay consumers for their recycled devices on the spot, either in cash or store credits.

“By tracking the serial numbers of every device we recycle into our audited downstream, we can be sure that the devices are either properly recycled into reuse, or are destroyed and run through the most efficient materials reclamation processes in the world in order to protect the environment here and overseas,” said Seth Heine, chief green officer and co-founder of ecoATM.

“We believe that ecoATM creates a new standard of accountability and responsibility for the reuse of these devices,” he continued. “EcoATM’s capabilities will be expanded in the future to handle other devices including computers, laptops, monitors and a myriad of other electronics and, through incentives and convenience, will dramatically increase public participation in eCycling. In the process, ecoATM creates jobs, protects the environment, and alters the electronics recycling landscape on many levels.”

The second International Electronics Recycling Conference & Expo, held at the Hyatt Regency hotel, San Francisco, and was attended by several hundred industry executives and stakeholders in the e-waste management industry.   The event featured more than 60 exhibits and 40 speakers including executives from Panasonic, Flextronics, Oracle/Sun, Blue coat Systems, Techturn, Umicore, Boliden, Redemtech and several other leaders in the electronics recycling industry.

Besides EcoATM, honourees at the event included Sprint-Nextel for “sustainability leadership” ,1-800-RECYLING received the “best recycling resource” , Green Spot Drop Off was honoured as the “collection program of the year”, PowerON Services Inc. was awarded as the “fastest growing computer hardware company,”  M.A.I.T- India was recognized for it’s responsible e-waste management outreach efforts in India, and Creative Recycling Systems Inc was awarded as the “electronics recycler of the year”.
