SmartBin recognized by IBM Smart Planet program
Innovative bin-fill monitoring system aligns with initiative to increase efficiency
SmartBin recently announced that it has been recognized by the IBM Smart Planet Program for its innovative monitoring system designed for the waste collection industry. SmartBin’s patented technology offers a complete solution for the challenges of dealing with large-scale waste management in a cost effective manner by monitoring fill-levels of waste bins through sensors that are placed at the top of bins and measure a range of parameters including capacity levels in real time.
Aligning with IBM Smart Planet Program’s goal to create higher efficiency through technology, SmartBin optimizes the collection process for waste managers in the private and government sectors by providing real-time feedback for the planning and managing of waste pickup schedules. Through the remote monitoring of bins by sensors, waste managers can monitor and manage waste bins from a computer to more effectively allocate manpower and reduce fuel costs and emissions.
The SmartBin SmartManager Web interface provides a full service view of all monitored bins and can report through various methods including SMS alert messages and e-mail. SmartManager is configured with a map view option, which provides a Google map with colour-coded markers for each bin site, indicating the relative fill-level.
Introduced in 2008 by IBM’s Chairman, CEO and President Sam Palmisano, Smart Planet is a corporate initiative dedicated to solving some of the world’s most complex issues. The program underscores how innovative leaders in business, government and society around the world are capturing the potential of smarter systems to achieve economic growth, near-term efficiency, sustainable development and societal progress.
The SmartBin monitoring technology allows those with the responsibility of managing bin-fill to know the exact fill level in real time via the SmartBin advanced Web portal. SmartBin technology has up-to-the-minute knowledge of the chain of possession and disposal of materials, which enables bin-essential businesses to track and schedule pickups for a more efficient route. Rather than relying on a universal pickup schedule that may result in bins being emptied at less-than-optimal fill levels, SmartBin informs the waste manager when their bins are reaching capacity.
SmartBin’s technology can be easily and effectively deployed across a wide range of industries and waste categories including recycled materials, medical waste and electronic waste. All monitoring equipment used to receive, collect and collate the data on waste is provided free of charge as part of a monthly subscription to the SmartBin service.
“Our partnership with the IBM SmartPlanet Program underscores our commitment to be an innovation leader in the waste management field,” states Mark McCarville, founder and director of SmartBin. “We are excited to take part in IBM’s initiative to harness technology to solve the increasingly complex issues we face in society.”
