Elgin Recycling's customized 52,174-square-foot e-waste recycling facility was recently completed in Gilberts, Illinois. The new facility expands the company's recycled electronics processing capability and improves the overall operational efficiency. The facility was designed and constructed with the help of Minneapolis-based company Opus

Elgin Recycling continues to expand

Elgin Recycling is a family-owned operation that processes ferrous and non-ferrous metals, exotic alloys, and electronics. Their new Gilberts location processes recycled electronics from public drop-off facilities, breaking them down into components that are transported to downstream recyclers. The new facility includes a high-efficiency shredder and follows strict R2 data sanitization and security practices to meet sensitive information compliance standards and government mandates.

"This project came to us through a referral, but we still had to demonstrate why Opus was the right partner for the job," said Luke Zizzo, senior project manager with Opus. "Our integrated design-build approach allowed us to show how we could maximize the functionality of the space, streamline the process, and deliver a facility that supports Elgin Recycling's operations today and into the future."

Bob Conroy, owner and president of Elgin Recycling, said, "Opus guided us through the entire process, from entitlement to design and through construction, and helped us make smart decisions about how to use the space efficiently. The end result is a facility that improves our processing capabilities and positions us well for continued growth."

Elgin Recycling's new Gilberts facility, which will be fully operational in July, sits on a 2.76-acre site and includes a 28-foot clear height, six dock doors, two drive-in doors, and up to 58 vehicle parking stalls.

Opus was the design-builder on the project and worked in partnership with Architects Plus Design Studio PLLC, the architect of record, Structural Enginuity, Inc., the structural engineer of record, and Spaceco, the civil engineer of record.
