Industry veteran Hoornweg to be keynote at Municipal Waste Association Fall Workshop
Dan Hoornweg, a Waste Diversion Ontario board member and the first chair of the Association of Municipal Recycling Coordinators (now known as the Municipal Waste Association) is the keynote speaker this year’s MWA Fall Workshop, to be held at the Barrie Holiday Inn (Fairview Road), on October 29.
Mr. Hoornweg’s presentation on the growing challenge of waste management in cities around the world leads off this year’s workshop, which takes the theme: A New Road Map for Managing Ontario’s Waste.
Dan Hoornweg was a lead urban specialist in the World Bank's central Urban Advisory Unit before moving back to Ontario in 2012. During his almost 20 years at the bank, Dan worked with more than 400 cities in all of its six geographic regions.
After the keynote address, Phil Zigby, chair of the MWA Markets, Operations & Contracts committee, will take a look at the recycling markets. MWA Chair Shirley McLean then talks about the proposed Waste Reduction Act (Bill 91), followed by Cathie Brown, a senior advisor at the Association of Municipalities of Ontario, who will provide AMO’s perspective.
Updates on how the existing industry funding organizations are continuing their work in the meantime will be given by Lyle Clarke (Stewardship Ontario), Jonathan Spencer (Ontario Electronic Stewardship) and Andrew Horsman (Ontario Tire Stewardship.)
After lunch will be the presentation of the 2013 MWA Promotion & Education Awards by the MWA P&E Committee. This is followed by the Region of Peel’s Merissa Bokla speaking on a new way to deliver P&E messages.
The subject of closed landfills will be explored in a session with Bob Moore of the Township of Drummond/North Elmsley, Lisamaria Akeson, Town of Whitby and Rick Maj from the Region of Peel. Courtney Daniels of the Region of York will speak on York’s integrated waste management plan, the latest research on optical sorting equipment will be explored by Sherry Arcaro of Stewardship Ontario, and Mike Birett will discuss news from the Continuous Improvement Fund.
Registration fees for the fall workshop are $195 plus HST for members, $275 plus HST for future members, and this includes refreshments and lunch. A registration form is included with the interim workshop program available from the MWA website.
