2013 C&D World show largest ever

Newly rebranded organization names first woman President

2013 C&D World show largest ever

By the time C&D World 2013, the Annual Meeting of the newly rebranded Construction & Demolition Recycling Association (formerly the Construction Materials Recycling Association), closed its doors in April at its recent meeting in Tampa, Florida, it was the largest show in the 20 years the event has been held. More than 300 attendees and the largest exhibit floor ever were hallmarks of the show.

The CDRA’s Convention Committee put together an expanded program that featured a dual track set of programs in order to provide attendees additional information opportunities. The well-attended program covered everything from concrete recycling, asphalt shingle recycling, carpet and plastics recycling, as well as an economic forecast on public infrastructure spending and an inspiring presentation by Jorge Caspary, Director of Solid Waste for the Florida DEP, about the state’s requirement on recycling 75% of all C&D, an idea that had many in the audience wanting to move their recycling operations to the Sunshine State.

At this year's C&D World, Valerie Montecalvo, president of Bayshore Recycling, Keasbey, NJ, was named President of the Construction & Demolition Recycling Association, and is the first woman to hold the position.

“The CDRA is a dynamic, rapidly growing organization that promotes the materials companies like our as turning into usable end products that help promote environmental stewardship,” says Montecalvo. “I look forward to working with the CDRA Board of Directors to continue that growth and to serve the C&D recycling industry.”

Another highlight of the event was the inaugural C&D Recycling Hall of Fame presentations with four inductees: Mason Brown, Big City Crushed Concrete; William Guptail, General Kinematics; Anthony Lomangino, Sun Recycling; and Louis Sanzaro, Ocean County Recycling Centers. Two other awards were presented at C&D World 2013. Cherry Companies, Houston, TX, won for C&D Recycler of the Year, with Leonard Cherry accepting, and Michael Dinneen, Agg Rok Materials, Grove City, OH, being honored as CDRA Member of the Year.

Elected into officer positions were Jason Haus, CEO, Dem-Con, Shakopee, MN, as vice president of the association, and Patti Hamilton, Vice President, Marketing and Communications, Sun Recycling, Lantana, FL, Secretary/Treasurer. John Adelman, President, CPRC Group, moves to Past President of the association.

Two new members were also added to the organization’s Board of Directors. Ken Hoving, President, K Hoving Companies, West Chicago, IL, and Bruno Lagace, President, Sparta Innovations, Notre Dame, NB, Canada.

According to the CDRA, the rebranding was done to more clearly identify with their constituency.

“As our industry has continued grow we wanted to highlight the focus our organization has on the recycling of both construction and demolition materials,” said Valerie Montecalvo. “The goal of the more than 250 members of the CDRA is to promote the recycling of C&D materials.”

Besides performing a variety of projects to reach that goal, in recent years the organization has grown rapidly, and has expanded its headquarters, staff, and has such offerings as an industry-specific safety manual, a concrete recycling white paper, material specific websites for concrete, asphalt shingles and gypsum, and recently started up a C&D Recycling Hall of Fame to honor those pioneers and leaders in the industry.

As part of its rebranding the CDRA has a new and more fully interactive website that will remain at www.cdrecycling.org. The new, state-of-the-art design will allow members to pay dues and other bills online, download association documents, and allow for association committee members to have their own areas for their correspondence.  Most of the material-specific websites the CDRA manages will also have the same design. The website also has features to allow it to provide other member services in the future.

“For the immediate future of the CDRA we will be developing a strategic plan to harness the tremendous energy the association is generating, as well as look at how we can continue our growth and influence,” said Montecalvo.

In 2014 the CDRA will co-locate C&D World on March 5 during the huge ConExpo-Con/Agg show in Las Vegas, which runs March 4-10. More information about the event will be posted on the association’s website, www.cdrecycling.org.
