Sulapac to further develop microplastic-free material
Latest round of investment a boost in mission to help save the world from plastic waste
Finnish startup Sulapac has raised €15 million to engine its scale-up and internationalization, including the further development and broadening of its portfolio, part of which involves replacing plastic with a new microplastic-free material innovation.
With the recent funding the company plans to scale-up its material production and continue the development of new and improved formulas, including a flexible version of its Universal Material for Injection Molding applications. New investors include the world's leading luxury house Chanel and international media houses, all with valuable expertise to accelerate Sulapac's expansion.
According to the startup, this latest investment round enables the continuation of its work replacing plastic with a microplastic-free material innovation, and to scale-up its material production and continue the development of new and improved formulas, including a flexible version of its Universal Material for Injection Molding.
One of Sulapac's groundbreaking innovations, prior to this new development, is the world's most sustainable mass-producible straw that is now available for brands and consumers.
The new funding comes from Chanel, Mousse Partners, Sky Ocean Ventures, Bonnier Ventures and Lifeline Ventures, as well as a group of private investors. Sulpac says the partners were carefully chosen with emphasis on long-term support, commitment to sustainability and expertise relevant to Sulapac's growth.

Besides new investors, Sulapac's growth will be supported by its newly appointed advisors, including Sophia Bendz, who was previously in charge of Spotify's global marketing and is now a partner at venture capital firm Atomico, and Charli Kumar, who launched and leads Sky's start-up TV business in Spain. Jukka Moisio, former CEO of the global food packaging specialist Huhtamäki, recently started as the Chair of Sulapac's board of directors.

Traditionally, waste management companies have operated using a simple "management of waste" approach to operating a MRF. Throughput targets and continuous operation (minimal downtime) were the main driving forces. The industry has changed however, and the focus moving forward is now on optimizing system performance and reliability, in conjunction with increasing recycling rates and a drive for a "greener" and more sustainable tomorrow.
When considering the addition of, or upgrade to, an "intelligent" MRF, for municipalities or private operators, the main factors should always be the client's (operator) current requirements, and evolving market needs, which include throughput, reliability, output quality, and adaptability. Equally important is a full understanding of what is really expected from any proposed system. Having an engaged and focused mindset for the project with the client from the beginning, will impact and drive the entire design process. This then impacts the overall project result, through to the productive, efficient, ongoing operation of the facility itself.
