Michael Gross, Zanker Recycling, San Jose CA, and Clarence "Jay" Giltz, Eagle Crusher, will be inducted into the C&D Hall of Fame, the industry's highest honor, at the Construction & Demolition Recycling Association's C&D World 2019, upcoming this March 10-12 in New York City.

Construction & Demolition Recycling, South Gate, California, is the facility named C&D Recycler of the Year, while Terri Ward of Notre-Dame, New Brunswick-based Sparta Manufacturing, is the CDRA Member of the Year. These awards were announced by the Construction & Demolition Recycling Association (CDRA) in recognition for excellence in the C&D industry. This is the 5th year the awards have been given out.

"This year's group of CDRA Award winners exemplify the best in C&D recycling," says Troy Lautenbach, Lautenbach Recycling and CDRA President. "The C&D industry is better off thanks to their efforts.

C&D Hall of Fame
Michael Gross is Director of Sustainability at Zanker, where he has worked for almost 30 years and is well known throughout the West Coast waste and recycling industry. Gross was a long time member of the CDRA's board and was responsible for shaping the association's policy and helping develop such programs as the Certification of Recycling Rates (CORR). He still serves on the Board of the Recycling Certification Institute, which administers the CORR program. He has represented the C&D recycling industry to the USGBC and the U.S. EPA, as well as working heavily with California legislators and regulators in pushing forward the C&D recyclers' agenda. Gross also is involved in several charitable organizations in the Bay Area.

Jay Giltz, Senior Sales Representative at Eagle Crusher, Galion. OH, has probably sold more crushing systems for the recycling of aggregates than any other person. Working 20 years ago with Eagle management, he helped position the company to become the leading supplier of crushers to the recycling industry by directing sales in that area and working to engineer the crushing systems to more efficiently work in the challenging recycling environment. He recognized early on the value CDRA would provide to his customers, and served on the CDRA Board of Directors to provide guidance on how to best serve the aggregate recycling industry. Giltz is only the second vendor to be inducted in the C&D Hall of Fame.

C&D Recycler of the Year
C&D Recycler of the Year is Construction and Demolition Recycling, Inc., South Gate, CA. Affiliated with demolition contractor Interior Removal Specialists, the recycling company focuses on the recycling of often forgotten commercial interior demolition debris, and also a donation program that reintroduces hundreds of tons of office furniture and fixtures back into the community every year through their partnerships with dozens of non-profit agencies. About 30% of the RCI-certified facility's incoming material is drywall, so it relies mostly on ground sorting in order to recover the most material possible.

CDRA Member of the Year
Terri Ward, Vice President of Business Development, Sparta Manufacturing, has been named CDRA Member of the Year because of her tireless work on the association's Membership/Marketing Committee, plus the direction she is providing as a member of the CDRA's Executive Committee. She continuously promotes the CDRA in her everyday work. Ward, who previously served as National Sales Manager at SSI Shredding Systems, has been involved in the waste industry for 30 years.

All the award winners will be honored as part of the CDRA's Annual Membership Meeting at C&D World 2019 March 9-12 in New York City.

KINSHOFER P-series orange peel grapples handle heavier loads and increase efficiency

KINSHOFER offers an extensive range of excavator orange peel grapples for scrap, demolition, loading and unloading applications. Unlike competitive grapples, according to Kinshofer, the P-Series hydraulic system is fully enclosed and protected, reducing the risk of damage to hoses and other components. Additionally, the grapple's unique tine design enhances material penetration, increasing the amount contractors can safely secure in one cycle and saving time on the jobsite.

Recycled aggregates for roads

Municipalities are responsible for the care and maintenance of vast amounts of roads, from lanes to highways. When those roads are repaired or replaced, there's the potential to generate a significant amount of aggregate material - concrete and asphalt removed from the surface that must be dealt with.
Today's roadbuilding contractors are taking this material and recycling it more than ever before. However, research is showing that some municipalities are far better than others when it comes to using this type of aggregate in their roads - and some are far behind.

LEED changes a boost for C&D

Construction and demolition (C&D) materials are hefty. It is why we can so effectively build roads, bridges and buildings out of them. It's also why, by weight, they are the most significant material in the North American waste stream. This creates a challenge for recycling, as it's usually too expensive, in terms of ROI, to ship most recovered C&D end products, including wood, concrete, drywall, asphalt, and asphalt shingles.

Rubicon Global and State Farm Arena divert nearly 12 tons of waste from landfills

Rubicon Global, the Atlanta-based technology company that provides waste, recycling and smart city solutions to businesses and governments worldwide, has successfully diverted nearly 12 tons of waste destined for landfills from State Farm Arena during last week's festivities in Atlanta, Georgia. This waste was generated as a result of five events being held at the State Farm Arena leading up to and in support of the ‘Big Game.'

Ecowaste Industries to add to C&D materials transfer and MRF capacity

Ecowaste Industries operates the Ecowaste Landfill in Richmond, B.C. where they accept inert refuse, mainly from construction and demolition activities. This material is renewed into products such as compost, bark mulch and crushed concrete for sale. At the end of 2018, Ecowaste Industries Ltd. acquired the operating assets and facilities of Urban Wood Recycling and Smithers Enterprises, both based in Vancouver.  The transaction was approved by both parties on November 21, 2018 and the sale closed on December 31, 2018. Since the start of the year, Ecowaste has been accepting Urban and Smithers customers at the Ecowaste Landfill in Richmond.

New sidewall protection for OTR tires designed for concrete and aggregates recycling

At concrete and aggregate recycling sites, recycled aggregate is produced by crushing concrete and asphalt to reuse the aggregate in the construction industry as a base for roads or building foundations.  To keep operations running site managers rely on loaders to push large jagged chunks of torn up sidewalk, roadway or building materials - which can contain steel rebar - to the crushing line to reduce its size.

Frontline Machinery set to host 3rd annual Crushing & Screening Equipment Demo Day

On March 13th, 2019, Frontline Machinery is hosting their annual Crushing & Screening Equipment Demo Day. The largest of its kind in Canada, this special event brings together customers and stakeholders from the aggregate, C&D and civil construction industry for a live, hands-on demonstration of crushing, screening and stacking conveyor systems.

Cat multi-processors feature quick-change jaws, greater cutting/crushing forces, increased speed, durable design

Three new Cat MP332, MP345 and MP365 Multi-Processor models are heavy-duty, high-production tools that accept multiple interchangeable jaws for taking on a variety of specialized demolition tasks. The new models, compared with previous models, can cycle 50 percent faster and generate up to 19 percent greater cutting/crushing forces. An innovative locking system enables a single operator to typically change jaw types in 15 minutes or less, using only standard hand tools. An included stand securely and stably holds unused jaw sets.

  • Concrete Cutter: outer jaw cracks concrete, inner jaw shears steel
  • Demolition: cracks thick concrete structures
  • Pulverizer: crushes concrete, separates rebar
  • Shear: cuts structural steel, pipe, cable
  • Tank Shear: cleanly cuts tanks or plate steel at right angle on three sides
  • Universal: cuts steel and crushes concrete
