FIMIC and Zimmer America partner on new melt filter for Massachusetts recycling facility

New filter to process post-consumer polypropylene for Aaron Industries

Italian company FIMIC, in partnership with Spartanburg, South Carolina based Zimmer America Recycling Solutions (a div. of ZARS-USA, LLC), recently installed a new RAS500 model melt filter to process post-consumer polypropylene at Aaron Industries in Leominster Massachusetts.

Aaron Industries has become a leader in recycled plastic innovation and is one of the largest recycled resin compounders in the Northeast. It prides itself on formulating to customer specifications with 200 various grades of PS, PE and PP.
The filter was installed in April 2018, and will be processing 2000 lbs/h of PP on a Davis-Standard extruder using a 35 mesh punched screen. The installation process went very smoothly, with the machine fully installed within a day. With the help of an on-site FIMIC engineer and a Spartanburg based ZARS engineer, it was fully running by the end of the day. The second day was dedicated to training the operator how to properly run the machine.

The melt filter is an integral part of the modern plastic recycling process to ensure the highest quality output and greatest production efficiency. With the possibility of supplying both punched and laser screens, the FIMIC continuous and self cleaning filter systems type RAS and type ERA remains the most efficient and economical systems for removing paper, cardboard, aluminum, metal, rubber, wood, and other contaminants from post-industrial and post-consumer materials such as PP, HDPE, LDPE, ABS, etc. The FIMIC melt filter is able to filter many types of contaminants without the need of any pre-filtering or "police filter". In some cases it even eliminates the need for a wash process, while still maintaining high output rates, even with complex materials such as HDPE with very low MFI. FIMIC is also introducing new models to the North American market to explore different applications, like the new ERA filter. It is available with a 100 micron laser filter. It provides fine filtration for highly contaminated plastic and is especially suited for blown film, high-quality sheet and similar applications using recycled plastic that requires a clean melt.

The new FIMIC ERA consists of two filters, two melt chambers, and two discharge points in one machine. The fist chamber uses a punch screen to filter out large contaminants. The second chamber uses the laser-drilled filter to capture smaller contaminants.

FIMIC has specialized in the production of automatic self-cleaning melt filters for heavily contaminated plastic materials for over 20 years, and now continues to expand into the US market to demonstrate its capabilities.

Zimmer America Recycling Solutions is the exclusive sales and service representative for FIMIC in North America. The Spartanburg, SC based company has a fully stocked warehouse with all essential spare parts to keep customers' operations running smoothly.

Customer feedback based on proven designs is shaping the latest wood waste processing machines

Multiple major manufacturers of horizontal grinders have released new models in 2018. HOGS, as they are sometimes called (HOrizontal GrinderS), are unquestionably the workhorse of the wood recycling industry and are a key piece of equipment for composters, land clearing contractors and biomass-for-energy producers, as well as C&D and MSW processors, where in both cases, wood and other organics are part of a mixed stream of materials. The latest model horizontal grinders feature lighter weights with higher production, increased transportability and site mobility, diesel, hybrid and fully electric power options, along with sophisticated controls systems, and ease of use and maintenance for operators and owners. This article looks at the latest horizontal grinder models and updates from Morbark, CW Mill, Rotochopper, CBI, Diamond Z, Bandit, Vermeer, Precision Husky, and Peterson Pacific.

Packaging material a key issue for fight against climate change according to Iggesund Paperboard

In extreme cases, switching packaging material from plastic to paperboard can reduce a packaging’s climate impact by up to 99 percent.

Switching material from plastic to paperboard can reduce a packaging's climate impact by 99 per cent. For people who influence the choice of packaging material, this single choice can make the biggest climate impact during a product manager or designer's entire professional career. That's the conclusion of a study done by IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute for Iggesund Paperboard.

Doppstadt's Airflex 1500 Wind Sifter allows for plastic-free composting, cuts volume losses

The Airflex 1500 from Doppstadt: a wind sifter that gives the composting industry a technical solution that minimizes volume losses.

Plastic is everywhere, and sadly, it often ends up in many green waste bins. This causes composting site operators a lot of problems: they have to carefully separate unwanted bags and other plastic components from the organic waste in order to comply with legal regulations, including those of the German Fertilizer Ordinance (DüMV). However, composting site operators also want to achieve their own goal and offer high quality products to their customers, who are involved in the compost, gardening and agriculture industries.

REDWAVE report provides insight on the current state of the European paper recycling industry

The purpose of paper recycling is to produce high quality recycled paper, responding to the high-quality specifications required by paper consumers either from the graphic, hygiene or packaging sectors. In consequence, any collection scheme should be designed in a way to provide grades of paper for recycling adapted to the requirements of high value recycling, according to the EN 643 to the paper industry, either directly or after sorting. (EN 643 is the European List of Standard Grades of Paper and Board for Recycling.)

Municipalities need to help to keep up with demand for composting according to USCC

Some US Composting Council (USCC) members and staff have been on conference panels with our colleagues in the traditional recycling industry during the past year, and we've heard some harrowing tales. Tales are circulating of the cancellation of glass programs, the suspension of curbside recycling contracts, and of the costly retooling of materials recovery facilities to integrate increasingly complex sortation lines in order to meet the requirements of foreign markets to accept recyclable materials.

Backhus turner and Doppstadt screens provide needed production and versatility for converted composting site

Kerry Weaver, operations manager at the City of Lexington’s compost site with their new BACKHUS A60 tracked compost turner.

Regulation can be a powerful business stimulus. For the Town of Lexington, Massachusetts, state regulation proved to be a huge municipal benefit as well. When the Massachusetts yard waste recycling mandate took effect in 1987, the visionary leaders in Lexington converted an outdated, unused 30-acre landfill into a composting site to eliminate transfer costs for all the green waste they were collecting. Thirty years later, the operation has become a profit machine, effectively flipping hundreds of thousands of dollars of expenses to the other side of their balance sheet.
