Taking responsibility for recycling: ink and toner cartridges

Why should I recycle ink cartridges?
Someone once said that life is not measured in our big accomplishments; it is measured in the steps it takes to accomplish anything, big or small. Recycling ink and toner cartridges is a small step, which leads to big accomplishments, when we become aware of the amount of waste we produce using ink and toner cartridges.

The fact is, over 375 million ink and toner cartridges are thrown in landfills every year and that’s just in the United States. This means that 660 cartridges are being thrown away every minute in the US and that number is growing. The plastic material used in printer cartridges is a slow-decomposing polymer, which can sit in a landfill, polluting the environment, for 500 years or more. Allowing this process to continue should be considered irresponsible by any standards.

Responsible ink and toner cartridge recycling benefits all of us. We reap the rewards of our actions by saving tax dollars earmarked for landfills and by using less virgin materials, which conserves natural resources. We also save money.

Responsibility means understanding our connection with all life and the environment we live in. Recycling starts within and expands outward and should include all of our physical creations -- including the ink and toner cartridges in our personal communication equipment.
