5th Shingle Recycling Forum biggest ever

More than 320 people attended the 5th Shingle Recycling Forum in Dallas which took place from October 27-28, 2011. According to the Construction Materials Recycling Association (CMRA) participants were from all parts of North America, and came to exchange ideas on how to better manage in the fast growing and economically feasible shingle recycling market sector.

The event, organized by the CMRA and co-sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration, Owens Corning, Dem-Con, and the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association, covered all aspects of shingle recycling, from accepting the material to end use in a variety of markets. The most common end market remains hot-mix asphalt, where recycled asphalt shingles (RAS) are a natural additive that will decrease production costs. Both the recycling of manufacturers waste and post consumer (tear-offs) were also covered at the conference.

The CMRA says the focus at all their Shingle Recycling Forums has always been on information exchange, and this fifth one had presentations ranging from Shingle Recycling 101 for those just starting out to highly technical sessions on using shingle in high-quality, DOT-level roadways. In addition, there were presentations on alternative end markets and the environmental issues of recycling shingles.

“This forum provided almost all the information anyone needs to start up recycling and using asphalt shingles, or improving their current operations,” says Jason Haus, president, Dem-Con, and chair of the CMRA’s Shingle Recycling Committee.

“We heard nothing but positive reviews of the show.”

Other sponsors of the 5th Shingle Recycling Forum included CBI, Recycling & Processing Equipment, Rotochopper, and the National Asphalt Pavement Association.

The CMRA plans to organize the 6th Shingle Recycling Forum for 2013; the site is still to be determined. Visit www.cdrecycling.org for more information on the Construction Materials Recycling Association.
