Peel Region receives Gold Award for household hazardous waste program

Ontario's Region of Peel has been recognized by the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) as the top of their field, winning 2011’s Gold Award of Excellence for the Household Hazardous Waste Program.

“The award is evidence that clearly, we are leaders in the waste field,” commented Councillor John Sanderson, Chair of Peel Region’s Waste Management Committee. “Peel’s Household Hazardous Waste Program is typical of our fiscally responsible and customer-oriented approach to addressing waste issues.”

Award submissions from across North America were graded on a series of criteria including design, environmental benefits, performance, economics, public acceptance and utilization of equipment and technology. Peel’s application highlighted the region’s efforts to encourage responsible management of hazardous material through offering convenient, safe and accessible disposal facilities.

Peel Region’s Household Hazardous Waste program is an integral part of the region’s Community Recycling Centres – a network of five facilities that offer free disposal of household hazardous waste, a solid waste transfer area and a re-usable goods donation area.

The Region of Peel provides waste management services in the Ontario cities of Brampton and Mississauga, and in the Town of Caledon.
