Bearing protection rings extend life on VFD motors

AEGIS SGR Bearing Protection Rings from Electro Static Technology are designed to dramatically extend the lives of motors controlled by variable frequency drives (VFDs). Units are applicable anywhere there is a need to modulate the speed of AC motors with VFDs, such as with motors used to run conveyor systems, large grinders and shredders, oil and water pumps, air and hydraulic compressors, and for ventilation fans.

While VFDs deliver impressive energy savings up to 30 percent or more, they also induce harmful currents on the shafts of the motors they control. These currents too often damage motor bearings, and lead to costly downtime and premature motor failures. Without an effective means of shaft grounding, the currents will discharge through the bearings, causing pitting and fluting damage to the bearing race walls. Over time, this can lead to noise, vibration, and bearing failure, severely reducing the reliability of an entire system, and can effectively wipe out any savings from using a VFD.

The AEGIS SGR shaft grounding ring channels harmful VFD-induced shaft currents safely to ground. Unlike conventional grounding brushes, the SGR is maintenance-free and works with virtually no friction or wear for the service life of the motor. Installation is easy and quick, and because it comes in halves, the SGR ring can be installed in the field without disconnecting the motor from coupled equipment. Standard kits fit NEMA-frame motors with shaft diameters from 0.625 to 3.375 inches, and IEC-frame motors with shaft diameters from 19mm to 95mm. Custom kits are available.
