Canadian processor gets first kick at new PicBucket

PowerTech Canada Inc. recently completed an extensive customer evaluation and demonstration of its newest model – the 5000 series PicBucket. The Cannington Group is a full service environmental remediation company out of Gormley, Ontario involved in site remediation, hazardous waste cleanup, demolition, building decommissioning, tank removals and installations. On a project site in Hamilton recently, they were offered the chance to demonstrate PowerTech’s latest PicBucket.

According to Cannington, thanks to the unit’s patented integrated hydraulic cell technology, the 36-inch PicBucket and set of three demolition pins was used to ef-ficiently prepare large piles of road debris and rubble for processing, and direct feeding into their mobile crushing plant.

Cannington’s president, David Mc-Crossan, was more than anxious to get it installed on his CAT 330D excavator to aid in the processing of materials into a ¾-inch crushed product for their client.

The company’s crushing services supervisor Don Maynard elaborates, “The goal in crushing is single pass, with no oversized pieces being double-handled by the wheel loader or excavators. The ‘Paybelt’ scale, which is calibrated in tonnes per hour, is the crew’s performance indicator.” “The crusher and the related work crew...capable of manufacturing up to 400 tonnes per hour is, in effect, not working at its full potential if oversized pieces such as medians, light standards or sewer pipe sections encountered in this project need to be removed from the process for further preliminary breaking.” “In other words,” continues Maynard, “the faster that you can take the raw materials and get it to a manageable size to feed into the crusher, the more productive the crew can be. The PicBucket, with its internal 1,000-ft-lb. Atlas Copco hydraulic cell was, in most instances, advancing through the nasty, rebar infested concrete in just a few seconds.” Cannington’s onsite machine operator, Michael Nagel, was thrilled to be the first in the world to put the PicBucket series 5000 through its paces. According to PowerTech, Nagel was instrumental in the product’s successful demonstration, and in proving the immediate, tangible benefits of the technology in this kind of application.

The PicBucket also allowed Canning-ton to free up their second excavator and operator. That second machine had been running a dedicated conventional breaker, but with the PicBucket, it was found to be better utilized elsewhere on one of their numerous on-going projects. “The savings for the company on this project are being realized in the reduction of fuel costs as well as manpower,” said McCrossan.

PicBucket percussion buckets are designed to be as effective as a conventional bucket and as powerful as a hydraulic hammer, combined into one tool. Units can be used for demolition, ripping, prying, as well as excavation, backfilling and compaction.

PowerTech announced recently that their distribution network in Canada now includes Hewitt Equipment Ltd., serving Quebec and Western Labrador, and Atlantic Tractors, serving Nova Scotia, PEI and New Brunswick. Finning and Toromont also count as distributors in the west and Ontario respectively.
