Drive-shafts built for rigours of scrap recycling
Scrap recyclers are building increasingly larger scrap metal shredding equipment to help feed the worldwide hunger for steel, especially in China, India, and other emerging markets. These shredders require durable industrial driveshafts that can handle the workload while requiring minimal maintenance. Dana supplies driveshafts for shredding equipment with motors ranging from 1,000 to 9,000 horsepower, highlighted by the Spicer Gelenkwellenbau (GWB) 393.90 Series cardan driveshaft. Engineered to work with 6,000 to 7,000 horsepower shredder motors, this drive-shaft features a split-bearing eye design that increases bearing life, load distribution, and torque capacity, while reducing the service time required to exchange bearings.

The Spicer GWB 393.90 Series drive-shaft has a compact design that provides up to 1,150 kNm torque capacity with a flange diameter of 550 mm, a split-bearing eye with a serrated bearing cap, bearings with labyrinth seals, and operating angles up to 10 degrees. “Dana has more than 50 years of experience in developing industrial driveshafts, and we have been successful because our design process accounts for operating speeds, motor shaft and rotor shaft inertia, spring-rate values, and many other factors that contribute to driveshaft performance and durability,” said Steve Watt, marketing & business development specialist for the Dana Driveshaft Products Group. “As a result, Dana produces a drive-shaft customized for each scrap-metal shredder that can withstand the typical angularity, momentary misalignment, and torsional vibrations common in these applications.” Spicer industrial driveshaft products provide a comprehensive line of cardan shafts with torque capabilities ranging from 1.5 kNm to more than 17,000 kNm for a wide variety of uses, including steel and paper production, scrap-metal recycling, marine applications, pumps, and ski lifts. Dana produces a drive series and size available to suit any need.
