SWANA to hold Road to Zero Waste conference in February

 Coming up in February, from the 16th to 18th, the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) is holding their "Thinking Outside the Blue Box: The Road to Zero Waste" conference in Los Angeles. The conference includes a range of expert keynote speakers, educational sessions, certification and training and an exhibit hall.  

On Wednesday the 16th, the conference opens with keynote presentations including:   

•   Zero Waste: The EPA Perspective; Jarred Blumenfeld, U.S. EPA, Regional Administrator  

•   A 10-Year Bridge Strategy to Build a Zero Waste Community; Eric Lombardi, Executive Director, Ecocycle  

•   The Role of Extended Producer Responsibility; Heidi Sanborn, Executive Director, California Product Stewardship Council.      

In the afternoon on wednesday, the "Strategies to Achieve Zero Waste" sessions will feature a panel of experts discussing a number of strategies communities can implement to help them achieve their zero waste goals, whether they are increased waste reduction goals, greater diversion through enhanced recycling and composting programs or the use of energy recovery. Speakers at the afternoon events will include:Bert Ball, Executive Director, LA Shares; Steve Young, CEO, Allan Company Bill Camarillo, Owner, Agromin, as well as Rick Brandes, RB Consulting, and Christian Felske, Technical Specialist, Waste Management Branch, City of Edmonton.  

Wednesday night will include a recycling and special waste division meeting, a welcome reception and the trade show opening. The Exhibit hall portion of this event will then run thursday as well, along with more sessions.   While at the conference, attendees can also earn CEUs (continuing education units) and get SWANA Certified at the Winter Training Center. Courses will be taking place from Wednesday, February 16th through Friday, February 18th. A certification Exam will take place on Saturday, February 19th.

The following courses will be offered on site: Manager of Landfill Operations (MOLO); Managing Transfer Station Systems; Managing Recycling Systems; Managing MSW Collection Systems; and Managing Construction & Demolition Materials.
