Province of Saskatchewan to spend over $3 million on scrap tire clean-up

According to a December article from Canadian Press, the Saskatchewan government says it will spend up to $3.3 million to clean up more than 6,600 tonnes of scrap tires at a defunct recycling plant.

The Assiniboia Rubber Recycling plant closed in February 2014, and the company that operated it went into receivership later that year. That left residents of the town with an eyesore and the government with the responsibility for cleaning up the mess.

Saskatchewan Environment Minister Dustin Duncan says the province and Tire Stewardship of Saskatchewan will work together on the project. He says there has been a request for proposals to find a company to do the clean-up.

Tire Stewardship of Saskatchewan is a non-profit corporation that was established in 2017 to serve as the scrap tire recycling program operator in the province. It now operates under a new Ministry of Environment program.
