Musings on the 2012 Canadian Waste & Recycling Expo

by Keith Barker

For over a decade the Recycling Product News staff has been attending Canada`s premiere event dedicated to the waste and recycling industry. The 15th edition of the Canadian Waste & Recycling Expo (CWRE) took place November 14th through the 15th at Toronto’s International Centre. According to show organizers, Messe Frankfurt, this year’s show saw a 30 percent increase in exhibitors, with 239 companies from five countries, as well as over 3,200 total attendees.

“This was our 10th consecutive year as an exhibitor at CWRE and each year the show gets better,” said Jackie W. Barlow II, Vice President, Paradigm Software. “The quality and quantity of leads continue to be of great value. We will definitely exhibit at the 2013 show in Montreal.”

As an editor at the CWRE, it`s a very valuable experience for connecting with manufacturers, waste management professionals and recyclers in the industry. Plus it’s always a great way to keep on top of the latest industry innovations.

Some notable, outstanding product and technology introductions this year included two new ballistic separation systems; the Excelarator Series from Excel Manufacturing, distributed by Recycling Equipment Canada (www.recyclingequipmentcanada.com) and JWR (www.jwrinc.net) and the Mach Ballistic Separator from Machinex (www.machinexrecycling.com/en/mach-ballistic.html)

Ballistic separators, a new product category for both Machinex and Excel, sort material according to ballistic properties and the trajectory created by an oscillating deck, allowing for separation into multiple fractions.

Also notable at this year’s show was a modular recycling and waste transfer station from French company Modulo Béton, with North American distribution out of Cambridge, Ontario. (www.modulo-beton.com). This product, which has been available globally since 2004 and which is installed around Europe, uses patented, precast concrete units, ranging in dimensions, to build modular, movable recycling and waste transfer stations in as little as two to five days (including delivery and installation.) Plus, this system provides space below the structure for storage of hazardous waste, vehicles and equipment.

CWRE 2013 is set for November 20-21 in Montreal (www.cwre.ca).
