Metso shredder helps to solve municipal solid waste challenges for Jeju City, Korea

Metso’s M&J 4000S shredder used to make SRF in provincial capital

Metso shredder helps to solve municipal solid waste challenges for Jeju City, Korea

Jeju City is the capital of Jeju Province in South Korea. The city has grown quite rapidly since the 1970s and has a population of over 600,000. Every year, Jeju welcomes more than 14 million visitors from mainland Korea, Japan, and China. However, with the expanding population and the growing number of tourists, the waste input stream has increased from 150 to 350 tons per day. That is why the city decided to make 200 tons per day of solid recovered fuel (SRF) to supply the SRF consumers.

 A sustainable solution

Metso’s M&J 4000S has solved the municipality’s problem once and for all, shredding more than 400 tons of municipal solid waste per day. With the other suppliers’ pre-shredders (from Italy and Korea) the customer also had problems with the incineration, because of the wide variety of shred sizes. With Metso they now have high burning efficiency and a stable incineration ratio. “Jeju City’s challenges reflects a clear trend in many cities worldwide - particularly in the East. The amount of waste is constantly increasing and there is a growing need for reliable solutions with large capacity.”
